IMAGE MANIPULATION

In this assignment we we asked to evaluate the work of other artists through research, critical analysis and practical exploration in the form of one case study and a final piece of creative work in response to the artist's work.

Kate Ballis

Kate Ballis (b. 1985) is a Melbourne-based fine art photographer based in Melbourne, Australia.

Her work explores the themes of seeing the unseen and she is frequently traveling to destinations that already feel otherworldly, and making them seem even more foreign to the earth we know.

RICH TONES

BEAUTIFUL FILTERS

STUNNING TEXTURES

INTENSE COLOURS

● What the brief asked me to do?

I am producing from the brief to create my image manipulation which has now developed from the Kate Ballis style of this artist's photography manipulation and I have taken my own interpretation of this creating my own technique and style.

I really love blue, this is my favourite colour and therefore it seemed the perfect choice to fit into creating something otherworldly and unique, I wanted to develop and manipulate the image into an alien world like environment.

● Who was the intended audience?

None other than anyone that views my work would get the feel of the alien otherworldly style I am trying to achieve.

● Were there any constraints placed upon you and how did you meet them?

  • Has to be in Kate Ballis style

  • Use of photoshop effects in a very specific way and order to achieve Kate Ballis

I would like to try adding colours of my own choice explore, experiment with image manipulation effects using Photoshop to create my final alien blues. Because of the specific technique and the fact image inversion is used, other colours such as green, pink, reds, different shades and tones of these colours come through without being able to keep the whole colour just one, or even just one colour and lots of different shades of blue, the inversion brought other colours in too, I tried to limit these as much as possible and enhance the blues to the highest percentage available within the effects of photoshop.

REACHING OUT TO THE ARTIST

MY LETTER TO KATE BALLIS…

Dear Kate,

I came across your work on instagram and on google search after being taught your style at Access Creative College Manchester, my tutor showed us your work online and talked us through how that may have been created.

I have produced a couple of styles similar to yours, I am only in my first year studying Graphic Design Level 3, part of my course is photography, we were shown a few different image manipulation techniques by famous photographers like yourself, I chose to recreate your style because I love the other-worldy style taking something of the ordinary through manipulation and developing an extraordinary.

I was wondering if you had a video tutorial that can help me to manipulate my own images to your style or any tips that you may have please, this is for my first year course work assignment, I am not a photographer, more of a designer though I do love photography and I think learning as many new techniques such as photo manipulation will really hep me to progress.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind Regards,

Ky Dolce-Vitali
