Majid's Magic Compass - Designing for storybooks
Design Brief;
I want to you to work up ideas for a children’s animation series about a boy called Majid who finds a compass in an old box in his grandpa’s attic.
In this first story when he gets it home and tries to clean it he finds himself whisked, as if by magic, to the pyramids of Giza where he discovers a talking camel called Bert.
He and Bert go on an adventure to find out what really happened to the beard of the Sphynx. Audience boys and girls from 8 to 12.
I am looking at Middle Eastern countries and researching the historical locations so that I can find. suitable image to illustrate when I draw the characters;
Bahrain, Cyprus, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the Syrian Arab Republic, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen
Theme and my interpretation for this assignment; EAST MEETS WEST
17 year old Arab boy named Majid who is a British Palestinian on a magical adventure journeying around the world to the far east lands, before Majid sets off on his adventure he finds a compass in an old box in his grandpa’s attic, he get’s home and tries to clean it he, then suddenly finds himself whisked, as if by magic, to the pyramids of Giza where he discovers a talking camel called Bert.
He then travels across the world with the magic of the compass to visit Bahrain, Cyprus, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the Syrian Arab Republic, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen to try and unlock the secrets to the magic of this compass and to what other secrets it hides, he then returns to Egypt when suddenly his compass comes to life after the Sphynx activates it, he and Bert go on another adventure find out what really happened to the beard of the Sphynx and use the newly unlocked magical power of the compass.
I have originally drawn up a boy in illustrator with a blue jacket and camouflage trousers, brown eyes and brown hair, pale english skin as this was looking at what came up on google when I was looking at images of a boy so that I could reference how a boy is built in terms of his frame, size, height. I wanted to make sure that my character was an expression of the brief in terms of the country and make it culturally appropriate and respectful.
I further developed the character into a young Arabian boy with a darker olive skin tone, brown eyes, brown hair, Egyptian/Arab clothing with a beautiful gold and white cotton Keffiyah/Kifaya/Ghutrah with a head piece accessory/bond/rope; Agal/Iqal/Egal/Igal
